Art from the past

I really do like medieval drawings. There is something about them. The simplicity of them. How the people are drawn. The clothes they are wearing. What they are doing.

What I really like about is medieval drawings is wondering who painted them. Was it a local artist, or a travelling journeyman working across the country?

These images come from the church in Ilketshall St Andrew in Suffolk, and were discovered a few years ago on walls that had been painted over.

I really like them, they are sort of cartoonish, but in a well meaning way.

But who was the person that painted them? Back then people had names that reflected their occupation. So you had Thomas Fletcher, William Cooper, Simon Butcher. Who painted these? James Artist???

Thinking of how the names worked, would my medieval name be Jonathan Carpenter or Jonathan FineFurnitureMaker?
